Stay or not to stay in Somalia

21/12/2007 N° 1228
The Indian Ocean Newsletter

When he speaks in public on the subject, the Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi denies that his country’s troops are having a hard time bringing the Islamic rebels in Somalia to heel. He even accuses United Nations agencies of not having been “positive” enough on the role played by the Ethiopian forces there. However, the internal discussions within the Ethiopian military executive are far less optimistic.

On 11 December 2007, from 11 in the morning until well after nightfall, Meles Zenawi held a meeting with his generals behind closed doors to evaluate the situation in Somalia. Those present included the army chief of staff Samora Yunis. According to information obtained by The Indian Ocean Newsletter, several participants in this conclave reached the conclusion that the Ethiopian army is faltering through the poor quality of its intelligence sources on the situation in Somalia. The morale of Ethiopian troops on the ground is at a low ebb in the face of repeated attacks by insurgents and the Somalian Transitional Federal Government’s inability to cope.

A few generals went as far as to suggest withdrawing the Ethiopian troops, at least from certain neighbourhoods in Mogadishu. One of the participants even said that in the event of a full retreat, the Ethiopian servicemen should be disarmed, in order to avert a possible mutiny. But the majority of the generals present in the meeting rejected this proposal. They pointed out that disarming an elite force would have a detrimental effect on the morale of the rest of the army and so cause even more problems. In the end, nothing was decided and no date set for a further meeting on this subject.

Ethiopia’ in Chaos as Oromo Leaders slam Zenawi’s Abysso-Fascism

Hints about a forthcoming War between Eritrea and the vanishing Neo-Nazi regime of relic Abyssinia

The tyrannical regime of the tribal dictator Meles Zenawi crosses its last moments; total political incapacity, brutal oppression, failed intervention in Somalia, paranoid plans to divide a United Nation like the Somalis and to enforce a fake unity among the disparate elements of fake ‘Ethiopia’, and a great number of similar racist projects have brought about vast political despair, extensive economic marasm, and social chaos in the colonial relic Abyssinia – fallaciously re-baptized ‘Ethiopia’.

The drama of Ogaden finds its equivalent in the collapse of the socioeconomic conditions in Oromia and the South; the last Abyssinian tyrannical regime of dying ‘Ethiopia’ finds no other way to survive except extrajudicial killings, indiscriminate rapes, carpet bombardments of villlages, wars, massive land expropriation, and selection of renegades among the tyrannized nations that aspire to National Independence and total secession from the Neo-Nazi Abyssinian Hell.

One major Oromo political formation, the Oromo Liberation Front issued a statement in the aftermath of its Executive Committee session; the text is revelatory of the diffusion of chaos and socioeconomic disorder from Ogaden to Oromia and the South. As this text generated vast discussions among Oromos, we will publish related commentary in a forthcoming article. Here, we will publish integrally the Statement of the Executive Committee of the OLF, advising for an attentive reading as there are hints in the text about a forthcoming War between Eritrea and the vanishing Neo-Nazi regime of relic Abyssinia.

Statement of the Executive Committee of the OLF (http://www.oromoliberationfront.org/PressReleases/StatementoftheExecutiveCommitteeoftheOLF-Dec2007.pdf)

December 2, 2007

The Executive Committee of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) held its regular session from November 25 - December 1, 2007. In its deliberations the Committee noted that:

1. The political crisis in Ethiopia is deepening. In a futile bid to stamp out the Oromo Liberation Army and the Ogaden National Liberation Army, the regime in Addis is conducting a brutal crackdown in Oromia and Ogaden. The indiscriminate targeting of the civilian populations is causing a humanitarian crisis at par with Darfur.

Political repression is also rampant through the width and length of the country. To make matters worse by severely restricting political freedom, even to the opposition in the parliament, the regime has emasculated the political process and made open resistance the only route left to seek redress for political grievances.

2. The specter of war, chaos and humanitarian disasters looms over the Horn of Africa. When the Ethiopian regime made an adventure into Somalia last year against clear warnings, it boasted that it would accomplish its stated goals and withdraw within weeks. A year later it finds itself in a quagmire. To cope with a determined resistance, the Ethiopian army is taking its wrath on the civilian population, as it has been doing in Oromia and Ogaden, unleashing a horrendous humanitarian crisis. The saber-rattling by the Ethiopian Prime Minister against domestic and foreign enemies in a recent speech to the Parliament does not bode well for a peaceful resolution.

Now that the Border Commission has expired without completing its mission, the resumption of another disastrous war appears an ominous possibility. Based on these observations the Executive Committee makes the following calls:

To the Oromo People

Despite the extreme brutality visited upon you by the incumbent regime for 17 long years, you have persevered in your noble struggle for freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Through your readiness to pay whatever sacrifices the struggle required of you, you have demonstrated your yearning for freedom is inextinguishable.

Despite its vain rhetoric, your enemy is weak, its grip on power fleeting. We call on you to remain steadfast and intensify the struggle. Your worthy cause shall prevail in the end.

To the peoples of Ethiopia

Upon coming to power 17 long years ago the EPRDF promised you peace, democracy and development. Today war is raging in Oromia and Ogaden. Ethiopian troops are dying in Somalia. Soon thousands may perish in another senseless war in the North. The constitution and the rule of law are openly and brazenly violated. Political freedom is severely restricted. Poverty is becoming more and more grinding rather than abating.

Despite the lofty rhetoric by the regime and its apologists, the facts suggest that after 17 long years none of the promises are kept and none are likely to be ever delivered. How long can you wait in vain? We believe you have waited too long and call on you to join hands and intensify your struggle to shake off tyranny and establish a new era of peace, democracy and prosperity. We also urge the opposition and resistance forces to close ranks and rally under the umbrella of the Alliance for Freedom and Democracy (AFD).

To the Ethiopian Government

The Ethiopian military is busy fighting in Oromia and Ogaden. It has bogged down in Somalia. Another theatre of war may soon open up on the northern border. A poor and divided country can ill afford to sustain such a costly and endless war at home and abroad. It is time for a thorough rethink of policy. The way out is a just political solution, first at home. We thus call on you to heed the call for dialogue to resolve the impasse.

To the International Community

The political crisis in Ethiopia has reached a critical stage. The regional situation is pregnant with multiple dangers. The prospects of further destabilization are alarmingly real. A humanitarian crisis of a magnitude that dwarfs Darfur could be just on the corner.

We thus call on the international community to grasp the gravity of the situation and set in motion a process that can bring about a comprehensive regional political solution.

Victory to the Oromo people!

Picture: Abyssinia has become through the ages the synonym of Murder. Here we see a drawing (

Ethiopia’s military preparations and MP defects

Thursday the 6th of December, 2007

THE INDIAN OCEAN NEWSLETTER

Ethiopia’s military preparationsN° 1227 01/12/2007

Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has just admitted to Parliament in Addis Ababa that his government had increased the military spending budget by 16.7%, to reach $54 million, in preparation for a resumption of war with Eritrea. According to information obtained by The Indian Ocean Newsletter, Ethiopian military preparations include the construction of an airport with a two-kilometre runway at Adi Daro in the Tigray Regional State (in the north of the country). This work has been directly supervised by the general chief of staff of the armed forces, General Samora Yunis. Furthermore, three large depots for munitions and military material have been discreetly installed at Wukro, Tembien and Shire. When General Abebaw Tadesse inquired of Samora Yunis as to why the ministry of defence had not been given prior information about the construction of these depots, Yunis sent him packing.

An Ethiopian MP has defected
N° 122701/12/2007

Statement by Secretary Condoleezza Rice

Meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister dictator Meles Zenawi

Statement by Secretary Condoleezza Rice
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
December 5, 2007

Today, I met with Ethiopian Prime Minister brutal dictator Meles Zenawi and representatives of the Ethiopian Woyanne government to discuss issues of bilateral importance to both of our nations, with a focus on Ethiopia’s relations with Somalia, Sudan and Eritrea. Other areas of discussion included regional security and fighting terrorism; democracy and human rights; economic development and food security; and public health concerns such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.

During today’s meeting, we emphasized the need for a comprehensive ceasefire agreement to be forged between Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and non-extremist opposition groups, which would help prevent further violence and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance in Mogadishu. We also discussed the need for the TFG to urgently resume the transitional political process outlined by the Transitional Federal Charter leading towards national elections in 2009. On Sudan, I encouraged Prime Minister Meles to send Ethiopian Woyanne troops pledged to the United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) as soon as possible, and to work with Khartoum to allow UNAMID deployments, including non-African troops, to move forward unhindered. I also urged the Prime Minister to avoid any acts that might heighten friction between Eritrea and Ethiopia and to take concrete steps to lessen tensions on the border. There must not be a resumption of hostilities initiated by either side. We also discussed the importance of strengthening democratic institutions in Ethiopia and the issue of food security, with a specific focus on ensuring unrestricted commercial food delivery throughout the country, including the Ogaden.
