The diary of Agazi soldier

(By an Agazi Soldier in Humera Shaleka)
Translated by Meqdela
It was one hazy dawn in the month of March. It had been more than three weeks since we got back to Ethiopia after completing our mission in Somalia. I am a member of the Humera Regiment of the Agazi Division which was at the forefront of the war in Somalia.

After completing our mission in Somalia in December and January, we were withdrawn from Mogadisu and put in Moyale. Our commanders had promised us all Ethiopian soldiers would be withdrawn from Somalia soon. We believed we were never going to return to Somalia.

That day, however, we were ordered to be ready to go back. Mogadisu had returned to disaster and a surge of Ethiopian troops was needed. Many of the soldiers in the Army didn’t want to go back; but as soldiers we had no option but to obey the orders of our commanders.

The following day we heard 120 soldiers amongst us escaped from the camp. We knew they would be captured soon. The Wogagen Regiment of the Agazi Division was dispatched immediately. The road leading to Addis Ababa and the major towns in the way were sealed, all buses and trucks searched. We heard that even farm lands were inspected. Sixty one were caught within two days.

A week after we were ordered to be ready, our regiment was dispatched to Mogadishu. Mogadishu was completely changed within two months. Even in the North, people were hostile to us. These were the same people who greeted us warmly when we arrived in Mogadishu first time. It is a torture. We were shelled incessantly. As we didn’t know when the mortar fires were coming, we had to stay day and night awake. We stopped smoking cigarettes because it was too dangerous to buy cigarettes from shops in Mogadishu. Some soldiers were attacked with knives when they try to light their cigarettes in shops. Women, children, all were hostile. We didn’t know who our enemies were.

In Mogadishu, if you see a weak-looking man with no teeth, having lost them chewing Chat, and you think that he is harmless, you are dead. Attacks can come from anywhere. If you stop to pee on the street, people will fire at you. When you follow them, they will get in houses and most of the time what you find in those houses are women and children. Mogadishu is hell.

Ethiopia [Woyanne] facing results of its Somalia adventure

Addis Abeba, 24 April - As the Somali population of Mogadishu is facing decimation, Somali fighters have taken over the city of Kisimayo. Nonetheless, Minister Meles Zenawi said military operations to clean Somalia of Islamist extremists were going well. Despite reports of wounded dying in streets and shelled homes and of hundreds of thousands of internally displaced, camping in the open without shelter nor emergency supplies, Zenawi insisted that there are “no mass casualties of the type that the so-called human rights organisations have been reporting”.

“I would be very surprised if it were to take us more than a week or two to completely clear Mogadishu”, Zenawi added. By now, some 500 thousand residents of Mogadishu have fled, while armed fighters, drawn largely from the huge Hawiye tribe, have flocked into the capital, determined to drive the Ethiopian invaders out. Meanwhile, the destabilizing results of the Ethiopian [Woyanne] offensive in Somalia are spreading into Ethiopia itself: the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) claimed responsiblity for a raid carried out in an eastern Ethiopian oil field, where a group of about 200 guerrilla fighters massacred 65 Ethiopians and 9 Chinese in their sleep.

From the beginning of its Somalian adventure on 31st December last year, Woyanne had been warned that any prolongued military presence in Somalia would have sent a message of incitement to the Ogaden tribes in Ethiopia, who are closely linked to Somali tribes on the other side of the border. Meles Zenawi immediately blamed the Eritrean government of being behind the ONLF’s actions.

ONLF Military Communique

24 April 2007

Before dawn this morning At 0430 AM local time in Ogaden, the ‘Dufaan’ commando unit of the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) conducted a military operation in the vicinity of Obala, 30km North-West of Degah-Bur in in Northern Ogaden. The operation
targeted 3 military units of the TPLF regime who were guarding an oil exploration field.

TPLF forces in Obala have now been wiped out with many having surrendered to ONLF commandos. The oil facility has been completely destroyed.

The ONLF has stated on numerous occassions that we will not allow the mineral resources of our people to be exploited by this regime or any firm that it enters
into an illegal contract with so long as the people of Ogaden are denied their rights to self-determination.

By refusing to discuss a comprehensive political solution to the Ogaden issue in a neutral country and in the presence of a third party, the TPLF regime has made clear its intention to continue to pursue a military solution in Ogaden. As such, we wish to
reaffirm to the international community that the Ogaden region continues to be a battle zone between armed forces of the current TPLF led regime and our liberation forces. It is not a safe environment for any oil exploration to occur. We urge all international oil companies to refrain from entering into agreements with the Ethiopian government as it is not in effective control of the Ogaden despite the claims it makes.

Oil investments in Ogaden will result in a similiar loss for any firm that believes assurances of security it recieves from the Ethiopian government which has never been in effective control of Ogaden

Further details will be forthcoming.

Ethiopian troops to start major offensive in Somalia

(By Ethio-Zagol)
Ethiopian and Somalia government soldiers are preparing to start a major military offensive against insurgents in Mogadisu, a source at the Somalia Embassy in Ethiopia said.

The source who requested anonymity because of the risks of leaking the information told Ethio-Zagol Post that the forces are at the final stage of their preparation. Mogadishu has remained relatively calm in the last week after the capital’s dominant clan, the Hawiye, had brokered a cease-fire about 10 days ago to end a calamitous fighting.

“The Ethiopian forces have gathered intelligence on the whereabouts of the leaders of the insurgents and they feel the time is ripe for major offensive to end the insurgency, “the source said. The Ethiopians will be helped by Somalia government soldiers.

Ethiopia has been stung by war crimes claims. On April 2, EU Commissions senior adviser on security for Somalia sent send a letter to Eric van der Linden, the commission’s head of delegation in Kenya, alerting him about the “significance of the events of the past four days in Mogadishu in terms of the international law on conflict”. Hawiye clan elders said that more than 1000 people were killed and 4000 wounded during the heavy clashes in capital.

The new offensive will, however, commence despite the accusation. “The Ethiopian government is nervous about EU allegations; but I don’t see any evidence that it will stop them from another attack,” the embassy source claimed.
